Two Types Of Problems

After reading a very interesting post from Seth Godin on the divide between problems and solutions in business interactions, I got to thinking a bit more about the two different types of problems we have with our websites or online marketing.
Godin writes that a discconect is caused between the solution someone provides and the actual problem that needs to be addressed “because people focus on the solution instead of the problem you were given to solve.”
The issue I have with this is that there are fundamentally two types of problems. The problems we recognise and those we don’t.
It’s a lot easier for us to say we need a specific problem we recognise fixed, other times we don’t know we have a problem. Or even if we know something’s wrong, sometimes we need the help of an expert to bring that problem into focus so we can address it.
When it comes down to our websites or online marketing campaigns, it’s useful to have an external perspective see if they can spot any problems we didn’t. Even better if they can take all these different threads and pull out the over-reaching ‘big picture’ problem we should be focusing on.
