Can You Profit From Your Blog?

There are countless articles, blog posts, ebooks and other guides about making money from your blog. But putting conjecture aside, we have some hard figures available to us from Technorati’s State of the Blogosphere 2008.

According to Technorati’s data, US bloggers earned an average of $5000 annually, where as european bloggers earned about $9000 annually. This doesn’t sound bad, but the figures were highly skewed by the top 10% of bloggers (by blog income) who generate an average of over $19000 a year from their blogs.

These top earning bloggers, generate almost 3 times as many monthly blog posts as the rest of the blogging community and over half of them spend more than 10 hours a week working on their blogs. They also invest more, spending an average of $7000 dollars promoting and developing their blogs.

So before buying into the get rich quick fairy tales a lot of sites/bloggers peddle, it’s worth considering these hard facts and deciding if you are ready to make the required commitment to building your blog. The problem is that even then, there’s no guarantees.
